Reflection

The digital world is having an enormous impact on education and schooling. Digital technology has changed the way we live, access, filter, consume, evaluate, produce and disseminate information (Tolisano, 2015, para. 2). Through the use of wordpress, powtoon, and prezi to create my blog, I have come to understand ways digital technology is changing how we learn and teach.

When using wordpress I could, almost immediately, see the benefits of having a class blog page. I now understand why Howell says “blogging is an interesting way to create opportunities for your class to be digital content creators” (2012, p. 157). Blog pages can enable students to control the flow of information, combine visual, audio and text and promote competencies associated with 21st century learning.

I found powtoon to be frustrating and time consuming to use, but appreciate that adding a visual aspect is important to learners. From my experience I understand how videos allow students to control the flow of information. (Educause, 2012, para. 4). At first I was sceptical that Prezi would be too similar to powtoon, but soon realised this was a very simple to use tool, that would easily allow students to add creativity to oral presentations and collaborate with their peers. It is wonderful that “learners and educators can access, interact with and create high-quality content, resources and tools, often at no cost” (Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, 2014, p. 7). Having hands on experience with these tools has given me a greater appreciation of the importance of a technologically rich education.

As a teacher I can now appreciate how and why I need to make use of the digital technologies available.  I believe that “Supporting students to build their critical thinking, teamwork and problem-solving skills, however, requires creating learning environments in which students can take risks and experiment” (Moyle, 2010, p. 29). It is my intention to incorporate many of the skills I have acquired during this assignment into my daily classroom activities.
